Recently at Occipital, we launched an all-new sensor: Structure Core. Equipped with a sophisticated suite of optics plus an onboard IMU, Structure Core is a perfect sensor for adding 3D sensing to cutting-edge devices like robots, drones and AR/VR headsets.
But it’s also perfect for something else — 3D scanning. As a result of this synergy, we are bundling a Skanect Pro license with a Structure Core and, for a limited time, we are offering the bundle at a reduced price; look for the “3D Scanning Bundle” on the Structure Core store.
Using Structure Core with Skanect Pro on your Mac or Windows PC is simple. After installing Skanect Pro (v1.10 or higher) on your computer, just connect Structure Core using the included USB cable to your computer, and you’re ready to go! Please note that Skanect v1.10 (or higher) is required for Structure Core support and you can download the latest version from Skanect’s download page.
Because of the high-quality cameras used on Structure Core, the results are excellent. Here’s an example of a stuffed animal captured with Structure Core and Skanect Pro:
Beyond great color textures, the combination of Structure Core and Skanect Pro creates high-fidelity, dimensionally accurate models with precise detail. Take a look at a wireframe mesh of the same stuffed animal to see the detail:

We’re back with an updated version of Skanect 1.9. The latest version – 1.9.1 – offers a few new bug fixes and feature upgrades to make Skanect as stable and useful as ever.
Most notably, uploading your 3D models directly to Shapeways is now back. Want to 3D print that 3D scan of your sleeping dog in solid gold, or get a colorized sandstone 3D print of a family heirloom? After you capture it in 3D using Skanect, Shapeways can print it on demand in 60+ materials, ranging from simple PLA and ABS plastics to precious metals, ceramic and even castable wax! You can even start your own 3D portrait business using Structure Sensor, Skanect and Shapeways together.
Beyond re-enabling Shapeways uploads, there’s one more minor update to Skanect 1.9.1. There is now support for PCs equipped with CUDA 9.0 GPUs, so you’ll be able to capture and process 3D models faster than ever before.
To upgrade to Skanect 1.9.1, simply head to the download page and get the version that is right for your computer. If you already have a license to Skanect Pro, enter your license information in the Prepare/License menu and you’ll be ready to go!
Finally, a tip for our pro users who use Skanect for a recurring 3D scanning task (say, 3D scanning people to print 3D miniatures). You can specify a config file to pre-set an optimal bounding box size, or an initial camera height, for instance. Learn how to do that here.

Dear Skanect Users,
We’re happy to announce the public release of Skanect 1.9! The most important change is the ability to stream higher-resolution color frames from an iOS device through Uplink, which results in textures with significantly more details. Below is an example of before/after when enabling this option.
Here is a more detailed list of the changes:
- The new additional higher-resolution color streaming mode is available when using the Structure Sensor over Uplink. You can enable it within the Skanect user interface by changing the value of Prepare->Settings->Uplink Mode. Note that when using higher-resolution color frames, images will only be captured when the camera is moving slowly to avoid motion blur and rolling shutter artefacts. The Structure App will now tell you if you have to slow down to capture a new color frame.
- A new, faster CUDA-based fusion replaces the previous GPU fusion implementation. Note that while this makes live scanning faster and maximizes the amount of data captured, it may result in an extra processing delay once you hit the stop button, especially with the high/very high quality feedback modes.
- An additional “Very High” feedback quality setting (for high-performance GPUs only, with more than 2GB of memory).
- CUDA 8 support updated to enable the latest Nvidia GPUs based on the Pascal architecture (e.g. GTX 1080 or Titan). You may need to upgrade your Nvidia drivers accordingly.
- CPU processing is now ~2x faster on Windows.
- Colorizing now enables Prioritize first frame by default since it usually gives better looking textures.
- The Shapeways uploader support has been extended with pricing and email sharing options. The API has also been updated.
- The Sculpteo uploader has been retired and is not available anymore.
- The plane cropping offset can now be set with 0.1% increments, and the time limit for recording can now go up to 180 seconds.
- It is now possible to specify custom bounding box sizes, location and orientation through custom values in the configuration file. This advanced feature will be documented separately in a following post.
To update your version of Skanect, download and install the latest version. Important: To use Uplink with Skanect 1.9 you will also need to upgrade Structure App on your iOS device. Download Structure App on the App Store.

Version 1.6.1 is here!
You can now grab the latest Mac and Windows (32 & 64 bit) packages from the download page.
This is a maintenance release, built against the latest CUDA 6 toolkit (instead of the previous CUDA 5.5, in Skanect 1.6.0), which enables GPU Fusion support for the NVidia’s new Maxwell architecture.
You should definitely upgrade if you intend to run Skanect of one the graphics adapters below:

Openni.org did shut down today, but at Occipital, we promised to support OpenNI when we launched our Structure Sensor.
So we’ve created an online resource page to host OpenNI2 binaries, sources and documentation.
The current version works with the Structure Sensor and Skanect, and over time, we will also do our best to maintain compatibility with other existing, Skanect-supported sensors.
Since the project is open-source, any help is welcome. If you are a developer, feel free to get in touch or send pull requests if you would like to contribute.

This is a long-due release, that includes a lot of performance improvements, visual tweaks and bug fixes, along with brand new features, among which “Uplink” is probably the most important of them.
Uplink allows you to use the Structure Sensor in Skanect, wirelessly.

Uplink is activated when you start Skanect on a computer that doesn’t have any sensor plugged into it. When this happens, your operating system may warn you about Skanect acting as a server. This is normal, and you simply need to allow Skanect to access the local network, and you won’t see the message again.

1 month, 4 venues, 400+ scans and 3D prints, 6,000,000+ files. This is what the 3Dify team achieved during the Brighton Digital Festival 2013.
3Dify built the 3D scanner using a rig of their own design, an Xbox360 and Skanect. The rig rotated around the person at various heights and was controlled using an Arduino and piloted using a retro 80’s joystick.
They made a nice documentary about their impressive work, see the video below!
